Yayasan Siswa Among Beksa Yogyakarta

In May 13, 1952, one of the brothers of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, namely Prince (G.B.P.H.) Yudonegoro, assisted by several members of royal family, has established a dance foundation by the name of Siswa Among Beksa with the goals a.o. to preserve and develop classical court dance of Yogyakarta or Mataram style.

The Philosophy of Mataram Style Dance

This philosophy has been created by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. There are:

  1. Sawiji means concentration of mind

  2. Greget means enthusiasm, consciousness.

  3. Sengguh means self-confidence

  4. Ora Mingkuh means No Surrender

A Yogyanese dancer should be considered as qualified, if he/she masters the dance skilfully with perfect movements and at the sametime, spiritually united with its Mataram dance philosophy.

Members of the board

Among other: Prince and Princess Puger, Princess Yudonegoro, KRT. Brongtodiningrat, R.M. Sutaradarma, R.M. Wibatsu etc. The chairman is R.M. Dinusatomo, the head of Art section, of Regional Office of Dept. of Education and Culture, Yogyakarta.

In the spirit of Karaton tradition, R.M. Dinusatomo the son of Princes Sindurejo, the daughter of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII, has learned Javanese dance since his childhood. But he has a good talent, so he becomes a good dancer himself, and now he is still teaching Javanese dance.

In the Karaton of Yogyakarta, he is the chairman of Paguyuban Wayah dalem (Association of Sultan’s grand children) "Narpa Wandu Wardana" and he is always involved in Karaton’s activities.

As a well-known figures in arts, he is adviser to the Yogyakarta Art Council and Art Festival of Yogyakarta. Rama Dinusatomo is also a successful family man, his two children, who are also good dancers, are graduated Engineers. Both of them have been married and live happily with their families.

Princess Yudonegoro, R.Ay. Reksokusumo, RA. Kusumarihastuti, R.M. Purnomo, P.C. Harjosudiro, R.M. Dinusatomo etc.

The Outstanding dancers

Female dancers; R.A.Y. Kuswantyasningrum; Sismanita; R.A. Yuliandari, Maya Damayanti etc.

Male dancers:

R.M. Harya Banendra, R.M. Kristiyadi, Sumarsono, Yoto, Danissubroto, Budi S, Padmono Anggoro etc.

Gamelan Experts:

R.M. Suyamto, R.M. Palen Suwanda, Suprapto, Santoso, Supriyadi, R.M. Sudarmoyo etc.

The Performance

Siswo Among Bekso, since its birth produces classical court dance performance excellently. All are of Karaton charastiristic.

The Bedoyo sacred dance, Gandrung Manis, the creation of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII could be performed beautifully. It was the story of a meeting between King Banjaransari and Prince Suprabawati of Sigaluh, West Java in the 14th century.

The Srimpi "Renggawati", a creation from Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono V. Depicting the search of King Anglingdarma by his faithful wife, Dewi Renggawati.

From the Wayang Wong:

God Wisnu against Cakil and his troop and the fight between the cruel King Rahwana against the Garuda Bird Jathayu from Ramayana epic. The above were some of the favorite plays, sometimes exposed by Siswa Among Beksa. In fact, it has a lot more of collections

Siswa Among Beksa has made performances abroad several times in 1971, 1973, 1974, 1993, 1996 in Europe, Asia and U.S. and in many big cities in Indonesia. Its shows always met with warm applauses from the audience

The Training

The learning of dance takes place on Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays, Fridays from 04.00 pm to 07.00 pm. As for the senior members on Wednesdays and Fridays at 07.00 pm to 10.00 pm.

The training places are in Jalan. Polowijan, the former house of Prince Puruboyo, in front of Pasar Ngasem Bird Market, West of Karaton.

In nDalen Kaneman – Joglo house belonged to the Karaton of Yogyakarta, in jalan Kadipaten Kidul No. 44 Yogyakarta, West of Karaton, off Taman Sari, Water Castle, which is also the official Head Quarters of Yayasan Siswa Among Beksa.
