Arya Yudistira Syuman

A Promising Choreographer

It is a true natural way of life when a 17 year old teenager, Arya Yudistira Syuman or Yudi as his friends call him, started learning ballet from Farida Oetoyo and Iko Sidharta at the Sumber Cipta School of Ballet, Jakarta.

His love and talent in dance, brought him to Germany to continue his study at the world famous Folkwang Hochschule in 1989. Yudi, who was born in Jakarta on November 11, 1968, did not waste his excellent chance to learn various dance techniques from super masters of dance of world quality.

From Bojan Jotov he learned classical ballet; Folkdance and Flamenco he absorbed from Juan Alarcon; the modern dance he received from Jean Cebron, Malou, Airoudou and Dominic Mercy. Graduated in 1994, Yudi joined Company Folkwang Tanz studio for 2 years where he had a valuable professional experience as a dancer by performing the pieces of Urs Dietriech, Susanna Linke, Olimpia Scardi, Rainer Behr, Marc Sieczkarek and Rafaella Giordano, in Germany and other countries such as Switzerland, France, Italy and Russia.

In his home country, Indonesia, he danced for noted choreographers such as Farida Oetoyo, Boi G. Sakti, Yanti Aranditio and Iko Sidharta. His expertise in dance, paved a way for Yudi to create his own choreographies.

Miauw

Yudi's 4th choreography inspired by a poem

"The cats" are playing around beautifully, enjoying their freedom. Sometimes they are roaming around, leaping each other and then they are dancing elegantly, following the melodious synchronic music of Astor Piazolla.

During the lively performance, a poem of an Argentine poet, Jorge Luis Borges, voiced by the dancers clearly, echoing a secret message:
Under the moonlight, you are a panther
We might presume only from faraway
You, since eternity have been for a long time forgotten
Allowing love from worried hands
You, in the other time
Through unknown divine decision
We are looking for you in forgiveness in the remote alleys
And the sunset is you, your loneliness

This is a vivid illustration of the world of cats. The movements show their natural behavior, sometimes lazy, care each other, but all of a sudden they quarrel, moving wildly. And then, tranquil again, as if nothing has happened. They don't care about their outside world. They don't pay any attention of what human-beings are doing, of course if they are not disturbed.

The dancers have performed splendidly, with skillful movements expressing the mood of small panthers. Although they are young but they are adroitic dancers with international experience: Aprida Darmawansyah, Christine Tjahyono, Sita Kristiana, Mira Teja, Bianca Sere Pulungan and Chendra Effendy. The Artistic Director of "Miauw", the 2nd production of "Kreativität Dance-Indonesia", is Farida Oetoyo. Arya Yudistira Syuman is the choreographer.

The short piece of 25 minutes duration was impressive. It was an exciting show. Prepared carefully in detail, a proof of a high professionalism. The audience applauded warmly with enthusiastic appreciation, looking forward to see his next creations and performances.

A calm and friendly Yudi
Amidst his tight schedule of general rehearsal of Miauw, very nicely Yudi agreed to give an exclusive interview. In a calm but serious explaination, he said: :"I prepare this show for almost six months, with a full collaboration with all members of 'Kreativität Dance-Indonesia'. We train very seriously as it should be, we wish to perform at our best.

This choreography 'Miauw' is inspired by a poem 'About a cat' written by an Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges and I interprete it carefully to a dance movement". Upon a question whether it has some symbolic meaning with human attitude, smilingly Yudi replied :"No, it is purely the world of cats.

Lullaby I
It's his first choreography, created while he was a student in Germany. Lullaby I, with music of Jan Garbarek, was an illustration of his personal experience.

Lullaby II
His second choreography, a continuation of his first work, music by Wong Aksan, involving 2 dancers.

Bulan (Moon)
His 3rd piece dedicated to his friends in Germany, showing the life of his friends. The music is suling (flute) from the Island of Bali. He prepared 'Bulan' for 6 months, performed by 4 dancers.

Lullaby I, has been performed in Padang in 1995, during a Festival of contemporary Dance. Lullaby II, has been danced during the performance organized by 'Kreativität Dance Indonesia" in Gedung Kesenian Jakarta in 1998, with live music under Wong Aksan, backed up by 7 musicians.

Kreativität Dance - Indonesia

Since his return from Europe, Arya Yudistira Syuman, together with Farida Oetoyo, Wong Aksan and his friend from 'Ballet Sumbar Cipta' in 1997 established their own dance company by the name 'Kreativität Dance - Indonesia'. Kreativität is in German language as a memory and appreciation of his study in Germany (as well as for Wong Aksan - his original name is Sri Aksana Syuman, who graduated from the same school with the subject of music). The other key persons also have followed dance training in Germany (Internationale Sommerakademie des Tanzes in Köln), such as Bianca Pulungan, Chendra Effendy, Christine Tjahyono and Sita Kristiana.
With the motto…. "not to create something but discover something", Kreativität Dance - Indonesia has a strong wish to push forward contemporary dance in Indonesia. In the 1999 - Indonesian Dance Festival, September 17 & 18, 1999 in Jakarta, this dance company has proven its professional ability. Besides performing its own two choreographies - 'Miauw' & 'Nurani' (by choreographer Chendra Effendy), it successfully collaborated with U.S. Choreographer, Howard W. Lark - 'The Summit' & Korean Choreographer, JOH Seongjoo - 'Second name of that woman' with all the dancers of Kreativität Dance - Indonesia.
